The Grand Bazaar with Historical Ambiance

The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is one of the oldest and largest bazaars in the world. This historical must-see place was built in 1461 under the order of conqueror Fatih Sultan Mehmet. It can be explained as a historical shopping arcade surrounded over 4,000 shops on over 60 streets. It is located on a 30.700m2 area, and it seems like a giant crowded labyrinth. It is a touristic attraction as well as a commercial center.

The Grand Bazaar served as a market place for textile and clothing for years, so it was named as Cevahir Bedesteni (‘Bedesten of Gems’); later it became a trade center in Ottoman for various goods. Today, The Grand Bazaar is visited by many visitors coming from different countries in the world. You can find many traditional and modern products varied from jewelry, antiques, weapons, carpets, special scarfs to amber beads, food and beverage. You will be impressed by the mystic atmosphere of The Grand Bazaar.

Keep in mind that bargaining is always suggested in Istanbul as well as in The Grand Bazaar.

The Grand Bazaar is open between 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on week days and Saturday. However, on Sunday and official holidays it is close.

Regarding its location, you can find almost all bank branches, health care cenrer, post offices, police station as well as many cafes, restaurants and local dishes. If you are interested in traditional tastes, you can try local restaurants!

You can reach to the The Grand Bazaar very easy. You can take a tram from Sultanahmet and Sirkeci and get off at Beyazit-Kapalicarsi station. Do not forget that the shops in The Grand Bazaar usually have someone who can talk foreign language or they understand you in somehow and try to help you friendly!
